GOLDEN RULES OF INTERVIEWING
- Always dress according to the type of job and company environment which you are applying for – when in doubt, wear a suit.
- Always wear clothes in classic colours eg black, brown, navy and cream. Ladies, never wear bright and “loud” colours to an interview eg purple, orange etc. Always go with a more classic and professional approach. Gents, a white shirt is always preferable to a coloured one.
- Whatever job you are applying for, personal hygiene, cleanliness and a fresh look are a must, as these are the first things a prospective employer would notice. Ladies, please make sure that if you are wearing nail polish it is freshly applied and once again keep the colour fairly light. Chipped nail polish gives a very poor impression of the individual. Gents, ensure that you are not “sweaty” from rushing to an interview or sitting in a hot car! Body odour can be a huge deterrent in getting a job.
- Never wear too much jewellery and/or make-up as it tends to be distracting.
- Tight clothing could give the wrong impression – remember first impressions are lasting!
- Don’t forget to make sure your shoes are polished and not scuffed, your hair clean and neat and nails buffed.
- Before your interview ensure that your car keys, cell phone and any other objects are neatly stored away, so that it allows for an uncluttered handshake.
- Obviously you never want to be late, and the same rule applies to being too early, as this can be very annoying.
- Never smoke or chew gum in an interview!
- Don’t ask for refreshments unless it is offered.
- Ensure your cellphone is switched OFF whilst in an interview! Get into the habit of switching it off before you go into the company to avoid forgetting it on.
